Jennifer Fuhrman, a junior nursing major, has decided to raise money for the American Society of Clinical Oncology Cancer Foundation by asking students to donate money towards either keeping her hair or shaving it off. Students have until March 19 to donate money, and on March 26, Jen will debut the winning look.
"I chose to raise money for cancer because everyone knows someone who has been affected by it, myself having at least three family members," Fuhrman said. "It is a deadly pandemic that needs a cure, and if I can help make a small contribution to that cause, it is worth it…even if it means shaving my head."
Girls across campus are impressed and shocked by Fuhrman's choice to go to such extremes to raise money for cancer.
"It's definitely a brave thing to do," junior Rachel Stadter said. "I don't think I could part with my hair. It's such an identity thing for women. But she's doing it for a good cause and it'll get a lot of attention."
Junior Andrea Eick has never heard of someone doing something like this.
"I think it's a great idea and I admire her boldness," Eick said. "I hope she gets to keep her hair though."
Fuhrman herself has gotten both positive and negative reactions, with some family members adamantly demanding she not shave her head.
"Some of my friends and family definitely want me to keep my hair, while others may go to extremes to make me bald," Fuhrman said.
When asked if she is nervous or excited about the possibility of being bald, Fuhrman said it's a mix.
"I might eventually miss it, but hair grows. I'd definitely look back in a few years and laugh if I did shave my head."
